The ATC SCM7 has the same magic midrange as all other ATC loudspeakers. It sounds honest and open with very high intelligibility and a deep look into the music. You hear an awful lot without straining yourself. Music floats into space and imaging is close to perfect. These speakers “disappear” as (small) monitors can do. The fun factor is very high and for a small speaker they are reasonably dynamic. Bass is punchy and tight but as stated before does not go very deep. A subwoofer can help you there.

Compare

Our first comparison is with the budget-friendly Elac Debut 3.0 B6.3 (€438 a pair). An excellent all-rounder that won’t empty your banc account. The Elac is larger and has a bass port at the back. It’s a great allrounder and an excellent starting point. It’s also easy to drive. Compared to the ATC, the Elac produces more and deeper bass, obviously, and bass is reasonably tight. But in terms of refinement and detail, the ATC wins hands down. The Elac has a relaxing and inviting sound. The ATC is more exciting and has a higher fun factor.

Compared to the more expensive Neat Petit Classic ($2,500 a pair), the ATC puts up a good fight. The Neat has about the same dimensions but has two bass ports and an AMT tweeter. A very different design. It is interesting to hear these two speakers side by side. They sound very different. The ATC and the Neat keep are equal in terms of dispersion and soundstage. Wide, deep and about the same height. The soft dome tweeter of the ATC tweeter is a bit more refined than the AMT of the Neat and although the Neat reproduces instruments and vocals very nicely, the ATC outperforms the Neat by sounding even more honest and open. It is again in the bass that the ATC cannot match the Neat . A SCM11 (2200 euro a pair) or SCM 19 (3449 euro a pair) will of course produce more bass.

Hallo Geoffrey,
