The Sound

Anyone who has ever played with power supplies knows that every power supply has a signature. Even if you connect it to a switch that only needs to send data to a streamer. You can hear this for yourself.

However, we didn’t just try the Plixir on a switch; we also connected the Elite BDC MK II to the Volumio Primo itself and compared it to the standard switchmode power supply. Naturally, the difference is greater in that case. However, the signature of the power supply remains the same with the effect on the Dlink switch. And that is fascinating.

Power, rhythm and robustness

Now the Volumio Primo doesn’t sound bad at all. So even with the standard switching power supply, it is quite enjoyable. Even in our reference system. However, when we connect the Plixir Elite BDC MK II (we use the single output in this case), it is immediately noticeable that there is more of everything. The bass is deeper and more powerful and the soundstage grows.

And that makes sense: better and deeper bass results in extra space in the stereo image. Not an unpleasant effect!

Listening further, we notice that vocals sound more organic and real. The intelligibility is also a bit better. This is not surprising when we see the measurements back later: jitter is significantly lower. And that results in more detail (and more flow).

Finally, we also hear that overall it sounds more controlled and there is much more ‘stillness’ in the reproduction. Everything feels quieter. Which is also not surprising; the noise at the outputs has dropped, as we know from previous measurements. See below for our measurements on a few streamers.

We will be very honest. We believe that everyone can hear this difference. And that for anyone still playing with a standard adapter on a similar streamer, it’s an upgrade. This is not a subtle difference. This is a true upgrade.
