Leaving all these equalizer extras aside for a moment, we hear a lot of detail during all kinds of tracks played. In fact, the sound never “clutters up. Certainly not if you use – in our case – AAC sources that are only converted in the headphones themselves. Still, even AAC – even in the high Music bitrates used by Apple as standard – remains compression.
Listening to Qobuz or Tidal via cable, however, gives the same positive picture. Pure is the term that best summarizes the sound image of the Sennheiser Momentum 4.
When listening wirelessly, you will notice that the range (or distance between source and headphones) is very good. That’s handy for hands-free talking on the phone, so you can enjoy pacing indoors and out in the garden while the phone is on the table. As for call quality of the headphones: they are – according to the other party – fine. This is only fair for a headphone in this price range.
There is also nothing wrong with wearing comfort. Even during prolonged listening no irritation occurs, nor does ear tickling and other unpleasantness.
Conclusion
The Sennheiser Momentum 4 is a wireless headphone pure and simple. Wired use is possible, but in the case of analogue control there are then some potentially source-dependent shortcomings.Wired listening without headphones switched on is definately not advised. Digital via USB-C, on the other hand, sounds great and is therefore the way to go for wired listening.
But this device is really 'born for wireless', which is where it comes into its own. In that respect, an absolute must if you want to take mobile (and certainly static home) listening to the next level. As far as we are concerned, the price is manageable and certainly not too high for the quality on offer. Furthermore, there is a very good chance that the Momentum 4 is a substantial improvement over virtually every other cheaper or almost equally priced peer. Recommended, then, if you happen to be looking for the better wireless headphones.
