With the Rega Saturn MK3 you score twice in terms of functionality: you get both a CD player and a DAC, which saves space!
There’s a lot to be said for separate and independent components in a hi-fi system. And there is just as much to say for integrated components. In the latter case saving space could play an important role. But integration can also lead, for example, to perfectly matched components under the hood. If you’re someone who likes the multifunctional concept, then the new Rega Saturn MK3 might be something for you. In short it’s essentially a CD player, where you can also use the DAC for other purposes. The CD transport can be operated independently too. So you could combine with another DAC in case of need, for example. It’s all very versatile. The DAC is based on a pair of Wolfson WM8742 DAC chips, whereby transport and DAC circuitry are each supplied by a separate power supply.
Windows
The DAC is accessible – among others – via USB which means you should be able to connect the Rega Saturn MK3 to virtually any computer and (most likely) various tablets and smartphones. Simply, via an ancient USB cable. The samplerate in that case may be chosen between 44.1 kHz and 192 kHz, with a resolution of up to 24 bit. For use with Windows, a driver is required, which you can download from the manufacturer’s website. The price of the new Rega is not yet known. According to the rumor mill, however, it will not be very different from the price tag that is stamped on its predecessor at € 2200.
