The Dynavector DV20X2A is a new entry-level model from the MC series by this brand, designed to elevate your vinyl hobby to a much higher level.
According to the manufacturer, the Dynavector DV20X2A utilizes the same basic structure as the high-end models XX-2A and Te Kaitora Rua. The cartridge features a solid aluminum housing and is equipped with a robust aluminum cantilever with a Micro-Ridge stylus tip.
You have a choice between two different variants of the DV20X2A. Firstly, there is the 20X2A-L (low output model), which has the same output as a regular MC cartridge. Additionally, the 20X2A-H (high output model) is available. This MC cartridge can be used in combination with most MM inputs, making it ideal for anyone wanting to enjoy the sound quality of an MC cartridge without using an MC step-up transformer.
High/Low Output Model
The high-output model 20X2A-H achieves an output voltage of 2.8mV. “By winding the coil with very fine wire frequently, the same output equivalent as an MM cartridge is achieved. This allows this MC cartridge to be directly connected to an MM input without the need for additional amplification such as a step-up transformer,” says the manufacturer. The low output model 20X2A-L produces an output of 0.3mV and uses the same PCOCC wire as the more expensive models. The recommended impedance for the phono preamplifier is 30Ω or higher.
Special Annealing Magnetic Circuit
The magnetic circuit, the heart of an MC cartridge, uses iron of very high quality. Dynavector: “This ensures excellent magnetic properties. Applying ‘special annealing,’ a heat treatment process that restores the original properties of iron, the cartridge is better equipped to deliver a wide sound-stage and unprecedented resolution.”
Compliance
With a compliance of 12mm/N and a weight of 9.2 grams, the 20X2A ensures compatibility with most tonearms from light to medium weight. Dynavector recommends a headshell with a low weight.
Neodymium Magnets and Soft Magnets
The 20X2A uses patented ‘softened magnets’ which, according to the manufacturer, “prevent disturbances and sharp sounds caused by natural magnetism without disrupting the output of the strong neodymium magnets. By utilizing the strong magnetic field of the neodymium magnets, sound quality is significantly improved, and vocals and instruments are better separated.”
Strong Aluminum Cantilever
Then there is the needle of the 20X2A, made from a hollow aluminum tube; its lighter mass aims to reduce vibration, which should guarantee more bandwidth and improved high frequencies.
Micro Ridge Stylus
As part of the needle, the stylus follows the groove of the record. It has the shape of a rounded point of just 2 microns, which, according to Dynavector, ensures a longer life and perfect tracing of the grooves in the record.
