Linn Klimax Solo 500: A New Generation

The completely redesigned Linn Klimax Solo 500 is, in the words of its Scottish maker, “the best compact monoblock amplifier we’ve ever built.

Built from the ground up, the new Linn Klimax Solo 500 is based on the legacy of the original Klimax Solo, but every square millimetre of its precision-machined aluminium chassis has been rethought and repurposed. According to Linn, the result is a product that surpasses its legendary predecessor on every conceivable level—while maintaining a remarkably compact form factor. The Solo 500 brings together Linn’s latest innovations into what it calls its most advanced compact monoblock to date. Key technologies include Adaptive Bias Control, a new hybrid cooling system, and a precisely engineered chassis—all combining to deliver a Class AB amplifier that exceeds the sum of its parts and outperforms many larger competitors.

Consistent and Stable Performance

According to Linn, the Solo 500 delivers ‘peak performance from the very first moment and maintains it consistently over years of use. It can handle long listening sessions with dynamic content, stays whisper-quiet and cool, offers substantial power output, and boasts an extremely low noise floor—with distortion levels 85 times lower than the previous model. Small in size, big in performance’.

Thanks to its slim design, the Solo 500 serves as a drop-in replacement for earlier Solos or other amplifiers. Its compact footprint also makes it ideal for active setups or space-constrained environments.

Adaptive Bias Control

First introduced in the Linn 360 Exakt Integrated loudspeakers and further refined in the Klimax Solo 800, Adaptive Bias Control plays a central role in the Solo 500’s sonic capabilities. Unlike traditional Class AB amps, which are manually calibrated once during production, Linn’s proprietary Adaptive Bias Control continuously monitors and adjusts the current feeding the amplifier’s eight output transistors in real-time. A powerful onboard FPGA manages this process, ensuring consistent optimal performance regardless of temperature, volume, or musical dynamics.

Importantly, Adaptive Bias Control also ensures that every Solo 500 performs identically, making it the perfect match for multi-unit systems. The result is perfectly balanced sound and a major contribution to the amplifier’s ultra-low distortion and noise floor.

Hybrid Cooling System

The Solo 500 features a newly developed hybrid cooling system that automatically adjusts to usage demands. Under typical conditions, a passive convection system—using thermally integrated cooling fins—maintains sufficient airflow. Under heavy loads, two ultra-quiet internal fans activate, directed by the amplifier’s FPGA, to provide additional cooling only when required, and always at the lowest possible speed. This should ensure optimal thermal management with no audible fan noise.

The cooling strategy is supported by Linn’s Utopik power supply, which adapts to the strength of the incoming audio signal, minimising unnecessary heat and overall energy consumption.

Design & Build

Visually, the Klimax Solo 500 is sleek and minimal. The casing is composed of three precision-machined parts: a base, an enclosure, and a rear panel, forming a clean and cohesive design. The top features a gentle curve with subtly integrated cooling fins. A softly backlit Linn logo adds a distinctive finishing touch. The amplifier sits on three stainless steel feet with rubber rings to enhance stability and dampen vibration.

Price and Availability

The Klimax Solo 500 is available to order now, with demo units already arriving at select Linn retailers worldwide. The price is €23,500 excluding VAT.
