IOTAVX B:ound Power Amplifier

British manufacturer IOTAVX has introduced the affordable B:ound power amplifier. It’s an unusual piece of equipment, and not just because of its name.

The new IOTAVX B:ound is a power amplifier delivering a maximum output of 2 x 200 watts, all from a compact enclosure measuring just 75 x 164 x 238 mm. With dimensions like these, you might expect a Class D output stage. Surprisingly, however, the British manufacturer has opted for Class B instead. According to IOTAVX, this decision was driven by considerations relating to sound quality. Now, Class B amplification has a reputation among many enthusiasts for producing somewhat higher levels of distortion, but apparently that isn’t an issue here. After all, IOTAVX quotes a figure of just 0.0002% (THD+N at 100 W / 1 kHz), which is hardly something to lose sleep over.

As for connections, there is a pair of unbalanced RCA inputs (left and right), along with a trigger input. Whether you’ll actually need the latter is another question, as the amplifier features an intelligent signal-detection system. When no input signal is detected, the device automatically switches to standby mode. Power consumption then drops to just 0.5 watts, while during operation it can rise to a maximum of 505 watts. Screw terminals are provided for connecting the speakers.

The IOTAVX B:ound has a price tag of €699, although at the time of writing we’re seeing a price of €549 on the manufacturer’s website!
