‘LG to Sell LCD Factory’

According to The Korea Times, LG plans to sell its entire LCD factory to better focus on the production of OLED panels.

LG believes the future lies in OLED panels, making LCDs unnecessary for their operations. The Korea Times reports that LG intends to sell its entire LCD factory to China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT), a move expected to fetch between $737 million and $1.47 billion. This acquisition would be a significant gain for the Chinese company, as LG supplies LCD panels to major brands such as Sony, Philips, Panasonic, and Loewe. Additionally, LG manufactures LCDs for smaller devices like smartwatches, smartphones, and more.

Smart?

One notable aspect of this deal is the increasing production of cheaper LCD devices, including televisions, by Chinese manufacturers. The rumored selling could lead to an even higher price decrease. Whether selling another essential factory to China is a wise decision in the current global landscape remains to be seen. However, it is evident that nearly every television manufacturer is heavily investing in OLED technology. Whether consumers will gravitate towards the more expensive OLEDs or opt for the more affordable Chinese LCD televisions is still uncertain.
