Netflix has once again increased its subscription prices, despite recently gaining a record number of new subscribers.
Netflix continues to attract new customers, with an impressive 18.9 million new subscribers added in the final quarter of 2024. This brings the global total to a staggering 300 million paying subscribers. However, the streaming giant seems to be a “never-enough” type of company.
In select countries – specifically the US, Canada, Argentina, and Portugal – Netflix is implementing price hikes. In the US, the most popular subscription plan is rising by $2.50, bringing the total to $17.99 per month, which is a significant jump.
Increasing Focus on Sports
One of Netflix’s biggest recent successes, which helped attract many new subscribers, was the boxing match between Tyson and Jake Paul. Netflix has since begun streaming more sports events. Surprisingly, during highly viewed matches, such as American football games in the US, the platform also displays ads—even to subscribers on higher-priced plans.
It remains unclear whether these price hikes will extend to other countries. However, given Netflix’s history, it seems likely to be just a matter of time.
