75 Years of Philips Television in Europe

The history of television is a fascinating one—and one in which our very own Dutch Philips played a leading role!

TP Vision is celebrating the anniversary of the first commercially available Philips television, affectionately nicknamed “The Kennel.” From the early days of the television era, Philips has been a pioneering force in the development of TV technology. As early as 1935, the “light bulb manufacturer from the south of the country” publicly demonstrated its first television at the IFA in Berlin. In 1950, the company launched its first mass-produced TV set: the distinctive 8.6-inch (17 cm) model known as the Philips TX400U. This was the world’s first TV to support the 625-line standard, which would later be adopted throughout Europe.

From Black and White to Ambilight

“The Kennel” featured a black-and-white display with a diagonal of around 17 cm and carried a hefty price tag of about 1,000 guilders—equivalent to several months’ wages at the time. As a result, it remained out of reach for most consumers. Fast forward to 2025, and things have clearly changed. TP Vision’s new Philips Ambilight TV 2025 range includes both premium OLED and QD MiniLED (MLED) models as well as more affordable 4K QLED options. These TVs are available in sizes from 32 inches up to 85 inches (nearly 216 cm diagonal) and, according to the manufacturer, are “packed with new technology developed by the innovation center in Ghent.”
