Apple has unveiled its latest iPad Mini, this time featuring a completely redesigned sound system.
There are several highlights to discover in the newly released 2026 version of the iPad Mini. First of all, Apple’s smallest tablet now features an OLED display. That screen has also grown slightly compared with previous generations, measuring 8.7 inches to be precise. However, the actual dimensions of the Mini remain unchanged, thanks to somewhat slimmer bezels.
The display’s refresh rate is limited to 60Hz rather than the 120Hz we’re familiar with from the iPad Pro models. But that’s hardly something to lose sleep over.
Speakers behind glass
The most interesting development (for us, anyway…) is an entirely new audio system. Apple has placed woofers underneath the display and mechanically coupled them to it. This should result in deeper bass reproduction and higher volume levels. Meanwhile, the custom tweeters are also positioned behind the screen. The new design also helps give the iPad Mini an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. In addition, Dolby Atmos is supported, providing surround sound you can literally hold in your hand. Naturally, listening through surround sound or Dolby Atmos-compatible headphones is also an option.
Under the bonnet, Apple has opted for the A20 Pro SoC, the same chip found in its latest iPhones. Depending on the model, you get either a five- or six-core CPU, with the six-core version available from 512GB of storage upwards.
Unfortunately, partly due to the ongoing memory shortage, prices are now considerably less ‘mini’ than the tablet itself. In the Netherlands, prices start at €759. The 512GB model costs €1,139 with standard glass, or €1,269 with nano-texture glass. And if you’d prefer a cellular model, complete with a built-in mobile data modem, that’ll set you back an additional €170.
