Convenient: the Fosi Audio MD3 MagDAC simply magnetically attaches to the back of your smartphone, allowing you to enjoy the sweet sounds of your music in significantly better quality.
Like it or not, wired listening still delivers the best audio quality—especially when using a good combination of DAC, headphone amplifier and headphones. Smartphones are often somewhat lacking in the first two departments, and that is exactly where portable DACs such as the brand-new Fosi Audio MD3 MagDAC come in handy.
Internally, the device uses an ESS Technology ESS9039Q2M DAC chip combined with four ESS ES9603 headphone amplifier ICs. On the outside, users can choose between a standard 3.5 mm single-ended headphone output and a balanced 4.4 mm connection. Maximum output power is rated at 180 mW.
Fosi Audio also states that an aluminum shielding plate has been placed between the mounting magnet and the underlying electronics. The idea is to reduce electrical and magnetic interference. In the latter case, however, it is not entirely clear how that should work exactly, given that aluminum itself is non-magnetic.
Another practical feature is the inclusion of USB-C ports, allowing users to listen and charge simultaneously. A 1.28-inch LCD display completes the compact device.
Pricing for the Fosi Audio MD3 MagDAC had not yet been announced at the time of writing, although availability is scheduled to begin on May 25 this year.
