Listening to the Fosi Audio Merak

Contents

The dynamics are certainly good. We can hear plenty of detail and good stereo separation. It sounds much more open than the CD player in the JVC set. What becomes noticeable after listening for a while is that it does sound rather shrill and harsh. This applies to both the line-out and the optical output. The emphasis on the treble can lead to listening fatigue, and a somewhat hollow and thin sound.

Unfortunately, we find the headphone output to be below par. On various headphones and in-ear monitors, it sounds rather dull and muffled. “As if there’s a cloth over the driver.” It’s possible that the volume control is to blame here. In any case, it is not pleasant to listen to.

Conclusion

The Fosi Merak is an attractive and compact CD player with good sound quality and plenty of connection options. It’s easy to operate, and offers good value for money. It could be a great addition, particularly for those living in a small room or space who are (re)discovering CDs. Discerning listeners will need to look elsewhere.
