PMC Fact. 12 Signature
Contents
PMC – Professional Monitor Company. Purely British. And basically a brand for Pro Audio. There are many studios that work with PMC. Including the studio we often work with: Artone Studio. However, we have also seen them at Wisseloord and Abbey Road.
The PMC Fact. 12 is a model with the famous PMC dome mid driver and of course the ATL transmission line system. This is a substantially different system for achieving deep bass than a bass reflex. A transmission line is in fact a long tunnel (heavily damped) to which the woofer is connected. The woofer sends energy into the tunnel via differential pressure. The damped pipeline filters out the mid-high, leaving bass.
Due to the length and resonant frequency of the tunnel, 1 to 2 octaves of bass can be added. The length of the tunnel is also tuned so that the bass remains in phase with the mid/treble.
The Sound
PMC has refined the technology of transmission line and now calls it ATL – Advanced Transmission Line. We have to say: the bass is deep. But we did have some issues with placement in the liveroom. Is it because of the space? Is it getting used to it? Who knows; we’ll investigate.
What we can say with confidence is that the mids and highs of the ATC Fact. 12 is wonderful. It is dead fast, lets everything be heard and plays big and tight in focus. Your author would venture to say that the PMC has the most beautiful and cleanest mid/high of all three speakers. Addictive…
Surely it is odd to experience this right in front of you. The PMC is a rather narrow speaker that shows no pretensions in terms of appearance. A bit like ATC: dry, tad boring…. but that sound! Everything is purposefully made and developed. The fabulous dome midrange driver is still the biggest gem, if you ask us. Impressive.
