Expectations
Contents
When a band comes up with a new album after a long absence, it creates expectations of course. In an exceptional case the album exceeds these often towering expectations (Portishead in 2008), but often the album can’t quite live up to them (Tool in 2019). Although I’m very pleased that the band is releasing a new album, I have to admit that the album doesn’t catch me as much as I had hoped.
Instead of further developing the sound of “Amor Vincit Omnia” and “Hammer And Anvil”, Pure Reason Revolution turns back to the sound at the time of the unsurpassed debut. Although “Eupnea” sounds less electronic, more organic, it clearly builds on “The Dark Third”. The music is an evolution rather than a revolution; just to mention one big cliché.
