The Eversolo Z10's preamp function and conclusion
Contents
The Z10 has an analogue preamp function, with analogue inputs and volume control for the amplified analogue DAC output signal.
The Kora can be put into a ‘by pass’ mode, so that only the power amplifier section is used. In comparison between connecting to a ‘regular’ input, where the Z10’s volume is at 0dB and the Kora controls the volume, and connecting to the ‘by pass’ where the Z10 controls the volume, there is little audible difference. For this price level, the Z10 delivers more than adequate volume control. Indeed, it is excellent!
The analogue input was tested by connecting the turntable preamp to the Z10’s analogue input and using it as a preamp for the Kora. This was compared to connecting the turntable preamp directly to the Kora integrated amplifier.
Chris Rea’s album “Shamrock Diaries” was listened to, a spacious-sounding master with great soundstage.
Big differences are audible. The Eversolo Z10 sounds less exuberant and has a smaller soundstage. The analogue input is adequate given the price level of the DAC, but those considering the purchase of a Z10 probably already have a better amplifier on hand.
Conclusion
With the Z10, Eversolo has added a new top-of-the-line DAC to its product line. It is clearly audible that the used AKM DAC competes with the best DACs. Eversolo has integrated this DAC well into its design and clearly showcases the AKM's qualities.
The entire soundstage is high-quality. A detailed, refined, spacious soundstage where voices and instruments are clearly positioned.
The resulting sound is pleasant. A bit more punch in the micro-dynamics would be welcome though, but Eversolo has chosen not to do so.
Do not forget your CD collection. Pair the Z10 with a good CD transport and you'll enjoy listening to it again. You do not need a premium quality transport to get more out of your CDs; the Eversolo Z10 does the job.
For a DAC at this price level, the volume control is exceptionally good, which is a big plus.
