The sound
Contents
We can be very brief: the Pura Dodo brings more speed, rhythm and openness to the reproduction. We hear a clear difference between the internal computer power supply, the Sbooster (which brings more calmness) AND this Pura Dodo. So even if you feed the custom USB and network card of an audio PC with it, the difference is audible. Bizarre, but true. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a d/a converter lying around that runs on 5 volts. Otherwise we would certainly have tried that.
Silence…
Now there are plenty of puns to be made about deceased dinosaurs and dead silence…. and we’re not going to do that. But the fact is: this power supply is very, very quiet. That silence gives room for microdetail and space between notes. That’s something very weird in our hobby; you don’t know what you’re missing until you’ve experienced the difference. Is this silence instantly “audible?” No… it’s noticeable. And that makes it very difficult to put into words. You then come up with vague terms like “the blackness in the music.” There’s not much we can do about that. Think of it as calmness… and that calmness allows details and micro-information to surface better.
Speed
A second thing that stands out is the speed of this power supply. Now we know that Miquel did not use standard voltage regulators. These have a high internal resistance which decreases speed. His solution does not. And while we have to take that story for true – and indeed we did not see standard voltage regulators – it is also just audible. The “snappy-ness” is striking. We have personally experienced power supplies on network switches to be quite audible. Above all, these should be clean and fast. This Dodo does that just fine! Although 900 euros for a power supply on a switch might be a bit crazy….
Overall
We played with this Dodo for a good month. And in that month it hasn’t left the audio PC. And it stays too. This newcomer to the market brings everything your author is looking for in a power supply: speed, calmness and openness. It is a power supply that – in my opinion – has no coloration. This is in contrast to the Sbooster, which comes across as warm and a bit slower. Sometimes nice, sometimes it isn’t… The Dodo … you don’t hear it. Impressive.
Quick and silent, this sound like Ferrum Hypsos! What’s the diff and which sounds better!?
Is there a Dodo with 1 output only 2?
I mentioned the Hypsos in the article. Both very nice PSU’s. I think the Dodo is even more silent. The Dodo only comes with two outputs.
