Synology presents RackStation RS1221+ and RS1221RP+

Synology presented the RackStation RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ (with redundant power supply), rack-mounted 2U storage servers with 8 slots.

The new Synology servers are designed to deliver high performance in a compact size. In addition to business use, they are also suitable for centralizing a large collection of movies and music. “The RS1221+ and RP+ are designed for small businesses, hence their compact size,” says Michael Wang, Product Manager at Synology. “These devices are not only a big step forward in terms of performance, but are also modest in size compared to other 2U devices in their class. And for businesses that need higher availability, the RP+ version is also equipped with two power supplies for redundancy and added reliability.”

Groundbreaking

The RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ are the first devices in the RackStation series to be built around the AMD Ryzen V1500B processor. Compared to their predecessor(1), they deliver 3.6 times higher compute performance(2), 3.8 times more random IOPS read operations at 108K and 2.3 times higher performance in sequential writes at 1,147 MB/s. This translates into more speed in data management and backup tasks and allows businesses to scale to more concurrent users and services while maintaining high performance output.

Compact servers for limited space

With their depths of only 306.6 mm and 407.5 mm (including server handles on the front), the RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ are less than half as deep as standard rack-mounted 2U devices. This makes them ideal for smaller rackmount enclosures where space is at a premium, such as wall-mounted cabinets or (in the case of the RS1221+) two-post racks.

Tailored to your needs

The devices are configured as standard with 4GB of DDR4 ECC memory, expandable up to 32GB. The PCIe 3.0 slot allows for easy upgrade to 10 GbE with a compatible NIC(3), or to add super-fast NVMe cache via Synology M.2 cards and Synology SVN3000 series SSDs(4). The devices are scalable to 12 disk positions with an RX418 expansion unit(5) and compatible drives(6). For businesses that want long-term support, the 3-year warranty can be extended to 5 years(7).

Easy Data Management and Protection

Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), Synology’s harmonized operating system, simplifies difficult and cumbersome data management processes while giving users full control over important decisions. DSM offers a wide range of features such as backing up IT infrastructure with Synology Active Backup suite, hosting a local private cloud with Synology Drive, virtual machines with Virtual Machine Manager, mail servers with MailPlus, and other SaaS services.

Availability

RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ are available immediately at Synology resellers worldwide. (1) The predecessor, RS1219+, features an Intel® Atom® C2538 processor. (2) Performance is achieved in Synology lab with optimized configuration and network settings. Actual performance may vary depending on the environment. Comparison conducted with previous generation RS1219+. (3) Please visit Synology’s performance page for detailed information on test settings. (4) Please refer to our compatibility list for compatible network interface cards. (5) M.2 SSD cache can be deployed by using the E10M20-T1 and M2D20 M.2 SSD adapter cards with two Synology SNV3500 or SNV3400 NVMe SSDs. SSD caching is also supported via SFF SSDs (2.5″). (6) The capacity of RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ can be expanded with a Synology RX418 expansion unit, sold separately. (7) Supports LFF (3.5″) or SFF (2.5″) SATA drives. Please refer to our compatibility list for approved drives. The RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ come with a limited 3-year warranty, which can be extended to 5 years with the optional EW201 bundle, an add-on for a 2-year extension of warranty service.
