Cambridge Audio has added a new offspring to its Edge series. This monaural amplifier is called the Cambridge Audio Edge M. Actually, the Edge M is a kind of split Edge W amplifier. The W is the stereo version and the M has the same design. Cambridge Audio promises doubled power, as well as a more “faithful and dynamic sound with less distortion”. In terms of appearance, a minimalist design has been chosen, including the rounded edges characteristic of the Edge series. Balanced inputs and outputs are also available. In the power supply you’ll find a dual toroidal transformer, which should ensure sufficient power even at high playback volumes.
Class XA
The power of the Cambridge Audio Edge M is 200 Watts rms in 8 Ohms. As an amplifier circuit, the manufacturer has once again opted for the special class XA structure. Here Cambridge Audio indicates that the sound quality of Class A is achieved, with a higher degree of efficiency (and therefore less heat).
The crossover point is moved outside the audible frequency range. Of course, the Edge M is compatible with other Edge series components, but you can also use it in a completely different ecosystem. By the way, the Edge series was introduced in 2018 because of the manufacturer’s 50th anniversary. The Cambridge Audio Edge M, available from this month, costs €4499.
