Upgrading from a more affordable cartridge to a higher-class model can often unlock a whole new level of audio quality. Released this year, the Rega Nd3, Nd5, and Nd7 are designed for precisely that purpose. All three are MM (moving magnet) cartridges, meaning you’ll need a phono preamp compatible with this type. Keep in mind that not all built-in phono stages in integrated amplifiers support MM cartridges.
The key difference between the Nd3 and Nd5 lies in the stylus shape. The Nd3 features an elliptical stylus made from manufactured diamond, while the Nd5 uses a natural diamond stylus. The Nd7, on the other hand, comes with a conical diamond stylus. Both the Nd5 and Nd7 also include an optimized pole gap, ensuring greater linearity and minimal crosstalk.
