Dan D’Agostino The Pendulum

The Dan D’Agostino The Pendulum integrated amplifier, previewed at the recent High End Munich show, is now officially available!

The name The Pendulum requires a bit of explanation, according to the manufacturer and Dutch distributor Reference Sounds: “Movement is a defining trait of every Dan D’Agostino product – in its design philosophy, its model names, and in its sound. Continuous, inexhaustible energy and power, combined with exceptional richness in tone. From the Progression and Momentum MxV to the Relentless Epic, Dan D’Agostino Master Audio Systems delivers a rare combination of mass and refinement in every note.”

The new Pendulum, they explain, symbolizes Dan’s most compact amplifier to date: “Where a pendulum in physics refers to a mass suspended from a rod that moves back and forth in constant motion, here it stands for compact precision. While the discovery of the pendulum is officially credited to Galileo Galilei and later refined by Christiaan Huygens for clockmaking, timing and musical flow are more than secure with The Pendulum. It’s relatively subtle in form by Dan D’Agostino standards, but inside it’s packed with the powerful amplifier technology that gives Dan’s creations their unmistakable sonic character”.

Modular Design

The Pendulum features a finely contoured aluminium chassis, measuring 43 cm wide, 11.8 cm high and 36 cm deep. It is built with a modular design: the base model is a pure analog integrated amplifier, powered by a custom-built 750VA toroidal transformer. Combined with high-capacity buffer banks and specially selected output transistors, the Pendulum delivers 120 watts into 8 ohms (240 watts into 4 ohms). According to the manufacturer, this lays the foundation “for a rich low-end response, tonal colour, and scale – all hallmarks of Dan D’Agostino sound”.

JFET Input Stage

The heart of The Pendulum, however, lies in its front-end. Its critical JFET input stage is directly derived from the Momentum C2 preamplifier. Paired with a refined power supply, this stage perfectly links source and amplifier output, resulting in – so claims Dan D’Agostino “extreme openness and detail, while retaining the richness and saturation known from the Momentum series. Though it may not have the sheer force of a Progression or Momentum, the Pendulum delivers breathtaking resolution and refinement”.

The modular nature of the Pendulum means that the purely analog base model – which includes three balanced XLR inputs – can be upgraded either immediately or at a later stage with a DAC/Streamer and/or MC Phono stage.

Optional DAC

The optional DAC, Dan D’Agostino promises, is far more than a standard digital-to-analog converter. With RJ45 and Wi-Fi connectivity, the Pendulum gains access to streaming services like TIDAL Connect. An HDMI eARC input makes TV integration easy. Because the DAC is directly connected to the input stage, the signal path is kept ultra short, providing a level of sonic quality and simplicity that no similarly priced standalone DAC can match.

LCD Instead of Analog Meter

While Dan D’Agostino is famous for bold designs featuring large heatsinks and a mix of copper and aluminium, the Pendulum is more understated. The input selector and volume knobs are finished with refined copper inlays, and the solid aluminium front remains true to the brand’s identity. New, however, is the LCD display that replaces the traditional green mechanical meter. This display not only provides more information but also communicates with the Bluetooth remote, which itself features an LCD screen.

The brand’s positioning is clear: “Ultra-high-end performance in an elegant design for anyone who wants the very best – without needing a massive space to accommodate it. The Pendulum swings with fluid rhythm and graceful motion, but it’s not afraid of a little Dirty Dancing either.”
