Good news for every cassette deck owner: Revox cassettes are on the way! Including Chrome tapes.
Analog is hip and trending again. The cassette has been making a comeback for some time, but the problem is that almost everything newly produced is Type I (FE). Those were never the best. For truly high-quality recordings, you need Chrome (Type II) cassettes. Occasionally, you might stumble across a batch of old stock, or you have to hunt through the second-hand market. In both cases, prices are often (far) too high. Revox and National Audio have now joined forces to reposition the classic music cassette—available in three variants, including Chrome—as a high-quality music carrier.
Made in Germany
The new Revox cassettes will roll off a production line at National Audio in Villingen, Germany, alongside the reel-to-reel tapes already being produced there. Revox has designed its own cassette housing, into which high-quality tape stock is fitted. According to the manufacturer, recordings made on these cassettes should come very close to the quality of the original studio masters—provided, of course, that you’re using a good (high-end) tape deck. The prices of second-hand decks (let alone NOS, or New Old Stock models) are rising rapidly. In other words: maybe it’s time to get that old cassette deck down from the attic and have it serviced?
