The new Accuphase C-3900S is a preamplifier, built on 50 years of experience in designing and producing this type of component of the Japanese manufacturer.
Anyone opting for a separate pre- and power amplifier setup will logically end up with individual components. The Accuphase C-3900S is a preamplifier that fits perfectly into such a configuration. It was released to mark the manufacturer’s 50th anniversary and embodies the accumulated expertise of the company’s entire history. At its core is a further refined version of Accuphase’s AAVA volume control. According to the manufacturer, this system does not use conventional resistors or a potentiometer to adjust volume, but a fundamentally different circuit topology, preventing changes in impedance and frequency response. In the C-3900S, Accuphase has implemented the Dual Balanced version of AAVA for the first time, resulting in improved electrical characteristics and an even further reduction of the already extremely low noise floor.
Plenty of connections
Another new feature is an exceptionally precise volume control housed in a meticulously machined aluminium block, designed to provide a very smooth and accurate feel during operation. When using the remote control, this mechanism is motor-driven. The input stage is built using discrete components and employs current feedback and ANCC technology, again to minimise noise and distortion. Input switching is handled by relays. The power supply is dual-mono in design, with separate supplies for the left and right channels.
In terms of connectivity, the C-3900S is generously equipped: seven line-level inputs and four balanced inputs, complemented by two line-level outputs and two balanced outputs. Additional features include a record output, an external preamp input, and various extras such as switchable overall gain, mono operation and a loudness function for those who appreciate it.
Prices for the Accuphase C-3900S preamplifier are seen at just over €32,000, clearly positioning it for serious high-end audio systems.
