Matrix Audio is expanding its N-Series with two new models alongside the NT-1: a DAC (ND-1) and a Class A headphone amplifier (NA-1).
Matrix Audio introduces the ND-1 DAC and the NA-1 Class A Headphone Amplifier, the latter offering a remarkable maximum output power of up to 20 watts. Dutch distributor Reference Sounds explains: “With the introduction of the T- and N-Series, Matrix Audio extended the design philosophy of its prestigious M-Series to more compact and more affordable models. This marked the gradual renewal of the Element Series. While the T-Series expanded with the TS-1 streamer (with DAC), the N-Series until now consisted solely of the NT-1 streaming transport. That changes today with the introduction of not one, but two new models: the ND-1 DAC and NA-1 Headphone Amp.”
Positioning of the N-Series
According to the manufacturer, the N-Series sits between the compact T-Series and the full-size M-Series. With a width of 33 cm, the N-Series remains relatively compact, but performance is anything but modest. “With this series, Matrix Audio distills the high-end philosophy of the M-Series down to its essence,” the importer notes. Until now, the series consisted only of the NT-1, a digital streaming transport optimized for delivering a perfect digital signal from local storage or streaming services.
ND-1 DAC
The ND-1 DAC is designed as the natural partner for the NT-1. With digital inputs including AES/EBU, RCA, optical (Toslink), IIS-LVDS and USB Audio, it can easily be connected to the NT-1 or other digital sources.
At its core are the AK4191 and AK4499 DAC chips, considered among the best currently available. The AK4191 handles digital filtering and Delta-Sigma modulation, while dual AK4499 chips perform the actual D/A conversion. These are supported by a linear power supply with separate analog and digital circuits, a low-jitter clock and extensive shielding—resulting in extremely low distortion and a very high signal-to-noise ratio.
A unique feature of the ND-1 is the ability to switch between direct-coupled outputs and transformer-coupled outputs. With the push of a button, users can select Lundahl output transformers for a warmer and more intimate sound character.
For even higher performance, the ND-1 can be upgraded with Matrix Audio’s SC-1 Reference Clock, which replaces the internal clock with a temperature-controlled external oscillator. For optimal signal transmission, pairing the ND-1 with the NT-1 via I2S/LVDS over HDMI minimizes jitter by bypassing traditional SPDIF interfaces. Additional optimization is possible with the SI-1 Optical Network Isolator, which reduces interference and ground noise.
NA-1 Headphone Amplifier
The NA-1 represents Matrix Audio’s most dedicated and powerful headphone amplifier to date. According to the importer: “Matrix Audio has built a strong reputation in the headphone community, and with the NA-1 it takes things even further by developing a high-end headphone amplifier with a fully Class A design and an impressive 20 watts of power.”
The NA-1 accepts analog input via RCA or XLR, with input selection and volume control handled from the front panel. It offers multiple headphone outputs: 6.35 mm single-ended, 4.4 mm balanced, and 4-pin XLR balanced.
A robust linear power supply with separate regulation circuits for voltage and current amplification forms the foundation. Four fully balanced amplifier stages deliver up to 20 watts of output power with an adjustable gain of up to 21 dB. This results in excellent control and a high damping factor, allowing the amplifier to drive virtually any headphone with ease. Notably, the NA-1 can also function as a high-end preamplifier thanks to its RCA and balanced pre-out connections.
