A subwoofer is usually a bulky device—and sometimes literally in the way. With the new REL Acoustics Planar subs, that problem is addressed.
Admittedly, the new REL Acoustics Planar PL-1 and PL-2 subwoofers are still far from tiny. However, their different form factor allows them to be mounted directly to a wall, saving valuable floor space. The smaller PL-1 uses two 6.5-inch drivers combined with a 10-inch passive radiator. The larger PL-2 features the same passive radiator, this time paired with a single 8-inch driver.
Both units weigh roughly the same—18.9 kg for the PL-1 and 20.25 kg for the PL-2. Mounting them on a wall should be manageable for anyone with basic DIY skills.
Both subwoofers also include a built-in AirShip Direct wireless module, eliminating yet another cable in the room. A wall bracket is included as standard, while an optional wheel set and stand are also available.
The PL-2 extends down to 27 Hz, while the PL-1 reaches 38 Hz. Both models are expected to become available toward the end of May, although pricing had not yet been announced at the time of writing.
