The seventies are back—now at Wharfedale as well. That decade clearly served as inspiration for the company’s new Denton 1S speaker.
Back in 1974, Wharfedale introduced the original Denton 1 loudspeaker, a model that became one of the milestones in the history of the respected British brand. For enthusiasts longing for the atmosphere of long-gone decades—and apparently there are more and more of them—there is now good news: Wharfedale has launched the Denton 1S.
The most striking feature of the new speaker is its full-range coaxial driver arrangement, featuring two cones mounted concentrically, one of which acts as the tweeter. This design allows for both vertical and horizontal placement. The appearance has also been refreshed. Gone are the traditional wood-look panels, replaced instead by plastic surfaces with rounded corners, resulting in an appealing blend of classic and modern styling.
Brilliance Switch
Thanks to its compact dimensions, the Wharfedale Denton 1S fits perfectly on a desk, although wall mounting is equally possible. The loudspeaker uses a fourth-order Linkwitz-Riley crossover network and includes an extra feature called the “Brilliance Switch.”
Switching from the normal setting to the maximum position boosts the response between 2 and 4 kHz by 1.5 dB. According to Wharfedale, this proves especially useful when placing the speakers close to a wall. Maximum recommended amplifier power is 100 watts.
The Denton 1S will be available in matte white, black or blue finishes. Availability starts at the end of this month (about now, that is…), priced at £649 per pair.
