We are seeing an increasing number of useful devices designed to bring older or genuinely retro hi-fi systems into the modern age. One example is the new Cayin BTC-2.
Many older hi-fi components lack not only streaming capabilities, but also Bluetooth—and certainly high-quality Bluetooth. The new Cayin BTC-2 offers an affordable way to add Bluetooth with modern codec support to a conventional hi-fi system, integrated amplifier or power amplifier. It’s a versatile little device that can also serve as a preamplifier and headphone amplifier.
The BTC-2 supports Bluetooth 5.1, with compatible codecs including LDAC, aptX HD and AAC. It also features an S/PDIF connection that can function as either an input or an output. When used as an input, the unit doubles as an external DAC. When configured as an output, it can be connected to a separate DAC or to the DAC built into an existing hi-fi system.
Inside, the compact all-rounder uses an ESS ES9018K2M Sabre DAC chip. Via the S/PDIF input, it supports resolutions of up to 24-bit / 192 kHz. Bluetooth processing is handled by a Qualcomm QCC5125 chipset.
A particularly unusual feature—especially at this price point—is the ability to adjust the sound characteristics using the remote control. Users can choose between minimum-phase and steep roll-off filter settings.
