Teufel IKONIO: A Powerful, Compact Streaming Speaker

The new Teufel IKONIO immediately stands out thanks to its substantial appearance and capabilities, including a maximum output of 650 watts RMS.

With the IKONIO, Teufel is introducing its most powerful Wi-Fi speaker to date, while at the same time opting for an entirely new product concept. According to the manufacturer, the IKONIO is therefore neither intended as a conventional successor nor simply another model within an existing series. Instead, it should be regarded as a standalone development combining the bass performance of separate subwoofers with the compact dimensions of an all-in-one system.

Under the bonnet is an advanced three-channel system, which forms the basis of the speaker’s acoustic design: eight drivers and eight separate amplifier channels cover what Teufel promises is a wide frequency range, extending all the way down to 19Hz at -6dB. Meanwhile, thanks to integrated Dynamore Ultra technology, a single IKONIO disperses sound into the room from three sides. The result should be a surprisingly wide and natural soundstage reminiscent of a genuine stereo system.

Specifications at a Glance

All the key facts summarised, in the words of the Berlin-based company itself:

  • New product concept: combines powerful subwoofer performance with modern all-in-one streaming in a compact enclosure.
  • Active three-channel system: eight amplifier channels drive an array comprising three tweeters, three midrange drivers and two subwoofers (650 watts RMS, 2,500 watts peak power and up to 118dB peak SPL).
  • Deep bass reproduction: two opposing 200mm woofers in a sealed Force-Balancing configuration reduce mechanical cabinet vibrations. This, in turn, enables a frequency response extending down to 19Hz (-6dB).
  • Wireless stereo: two IKONIO speakers can be paired wirelessly to create a stereo system, capable of 124dB peak SPL in stereo mode.
  • Extensive connectivity: direct playback via AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, TuneIn internet radio and Bluetooth 5.1, together with RCA line-in and optical input.
  • Intelligent operation: a touch-sensitive control panel features automatic button illumination activated by a proximity sensor, while extensive control is also available through the Teufel Home app.
  • Compact and functional design: measuring just 30 × 38 × 30cm and weighing 17.4kg, the passively cooled enclosure is designed to provide maximum performance from a minimal footprint. The covers are removable, while a matching K&M stand is optionally available.

Form, Function and Acoustics in Harmony

With the IKONIO, design and technology merge seamlessly. As a completely redesigned audio innovation, the sealed enclosure combines maximum performance with a distinctive character of its own, thereby creating an entirely new product category. With a footprint of just 30 × 30cm and a height of 38cm (weight: 17.4kg), the IKONIO fits elegantly and unobtrusively into any living room. Thanks to its expressive and unique design, the speaker makes a striking visual statement, stylishly finished with high-quality textile covers. The IKONIO is also particularly flexible when it comes to placement: traditionally on a TV cabinet or freestanding in the room using the optional K&M stand,’ is how Teufel describes its newcomer.

At the same time, the shape of the enclosure contributes directly to sound quality, we are told: ‘Thanks to the opposing Force-Balancing arrangement of the two 200mm woofers, mechanical vibrations largely cancel each other out, even at high volumes. A digital signal processor (DSP) controls the eight amplifier channels with extreme precision in order to reproduce even the finest details in the sound. Moreover, thanks to a carefully designed cooling system, the system operates entirely without disruptive fans.

Highest Hi-Fi Ambitions Combined with Years of Development:
Three Sound Modes for Every Listening Situation

Teufel explains: ‘The IKONIO’s sound reproduction is the result of years of development and extensive acoustic expertise. To deliver such enormous performance accurately from such a small footprint, Teufel relies on a sophisticated cooling system and the highest audiophile quality standards.

Using Teufel’s proprietary Dynamore Ultra technology, that power can be adapted flexibly to both the room and listening situation through three dedicated sound modes. According to the manufacturer, these are:

  • Immersive mode: creates a surprisingly wide and deeply layered soundstage. As a result, a single IKONIO sounds so spacious and detailed that it almost gives the impression of a genuine stereo system. At the same time, reproduction remains natural and authentic, with genuine hi-fi character.
  • Omnidirectional mode: transforms the speaker into a 360-degree sound centre, distributing audio evenly in every direction. This is ideal when the IKONIO is positioned freely in the room and you move around while listening. Wherever you are, you should experience the same precise sound quality, together with the sensation of being right there among the performers.
  • Mono mode: Dynamore Ultra is disabled in this mode, allowing the IKONIO to direct all of its output forwards. This direct sound radiation meets traditional hi-fi requirements and, at the same time, provides the basis for wireless stereo reproduction. When two units are used, the left IKONIO handles the left channel precisely, while the right IKONIO takes care of the right channel. According to Teufel, this guarantees exceptionally precise stereo reproduction.
