Philips TV introduces new OLED805 and 855 TVs

Philips TV launches two new premium OLED models: the OLED805 and 855. Both units have the 4th generation P5 processor.

The fourth generation P5 processor in the new Philips OLED TVs OLED805 (pictured above) and 855 builds on the advantages of the previous P5. The addition of the new Artificial Intelligence functionality takes the razor-sharp image quality even a step further. Both aircraft will be available in May. A bird’s-eye view of the most important specs of both newcomers:

  • The new Philips OLED805 (55″ & 65″) and OLED855 (55″) models will be available in May 2020
  • 4th generation P5 with AI processing ensures industry-leading image quality
  • Three-sided Ambilight
  • Android 9 Smart TV functionality
  • Excellent 50 Watt sound system with multiple speakers
  • The best of European design with high quality materials such as metal and leather
  • New premium quality remote control
  • OLED805 with bevelled base in dark chrome
  • OLED855 with new central base in dark chrome

Neural networks

The AI functionality of the new P5 processor, developed by Philips TV, uses neural networks and machine learning to analyse millions of image quality test clips from a unique database, according to the manufacturer: ‘The AI software is not simply designed to increase the performance of the five pillars of image quality (source, colour, contrast, movement and sharpness), but to achieve a better balance between those pillars. TP Vision’s image quality experts determine the general parameters of the system and, based on these, the AI software divides the content into five categories: landscape/nature, skin tone, sport/movement, black/contrast and animation. The AI function selects the correct category and analyzes the five pillars of image quality to adjust the balance to create the most natural, realistic and lifelike image’.

HDR

The 4th generation P5 processor with AI offers – Philips reports – ‘still better overall HDR performance for both HDR10 and HDR10+ sources, and enhances dynamic HDR content with Dolby Vision encoding using the dedicated ‘Dolby Bright mode’. The unique Philips TV functionality Perfect Natural Reality also continues to feature the optimized function for detecting bright light points, improved region classification and reverse display assignment. The result? Improved contrast, a greater depth impression and a more realistic reproduction of reflections, plus better sharpness and more natural and accurate skin tones – all aspects that help to turn SDR content into a true HDR-like image’.

Dolby Atmos

The sound quality of the previous models has been further improved. The 50W system now features a new woofer design with four passive radiators for extra deep bass; the two front speakers feature new midrange drivers on board, as well as upgraded tweeters for cleaner, more detailed sound performance. The OLED805 and 855 are both equipped with Dolby Atmos decoding, the Dolby Atmos Virtualizer function and Dolby bass and dialogue optimization.

Smart with Android 9

The new TV sets are also Smart models, with Android TV version 9 (Pie) and guaranteed ease of use thanks to the built-in Google Assistant and Works with Alexa capabilities.

Design

In its press release on the new TVs, Philips states: ‘The OLED805 and OLED855 show the best in European design, with an ultra-slim chassis, no edges and a high-quality metal finish. The OLED805 comes with a new bevelled base with dark chrome finish. The OLED855 has a new central base, also in dark chrome, which is angled towards the table. Both feet give the impression that the TV floats above the table. They also come with a new remote control with elegant, flat, backlit keys, in a metal finish. The sides and back of the remote control are upholstered with leather of responsible origin from Scottish leather specialist Muirhead, for a luxurious finish’.

The Philips OLED805 (55″ & 65″) and OLED855 (55″) will be available in May. Recommended prices will be announced later.
