Sony PS5 finally gets (almost) Dolby Atmos

The Sony PS5 was released two years ago and is slowly starting to approach middle age. Still, Dolby Atmos is (nearly…) available for it!

In the latest beta version of the firmware for the Sony PS5 game console, the option to use Dolby Atmos is finally available. For example, through a connected Atmos-capable soundbar or hi-fi system you can enjoy an extra dimension in sound. Please note that this option is only available in the beta firmware right now! If you do not want to burn your fingers on that and/or not be a guinea pig, then some extra patience is required. But considering that most PS5 users have been waiting for this feature since its introduction, a few more weeks of patience is also bearable, we think…

You want to get started with the Beta anyway?

If you want to take the gamble and install the beta, activate Dolby Atmos by connecting a Dolby Atmos-capable destination device via HDMI eARC. Then in the Sony PS 5, go to the system menu via Settings, Sound, Audio Output and Audio Format Priority. Then select Dolby Atmos from the selection menu. According to the manufacturer, in the very near future it should also be possible to listen to Dolby Atmos via streaming apps, among other things. In any case, certain versions of the PS5 can already be deployed as a Blu-ray player, so the game console will be even more a central entertainment device after the coming update.
