French manufacturer Reavon has announced it will stop producing Blu-ray players. For enthusiasts, this means even fewer options remain.
More and more brands are throwing in the towel when it comes to Blu-ray players. Major names like Sony, Samsung, and earlier this spring, Pioneer, have already exited the market. Now Reavon has stated that, for them as well, it’s the end of the line for this format. Whether it’s still worthwhile to invest in a physical film collection is a decision each person will need to weigh for themselves.
One way to avoid problems in the future could be to buy a Blu-ray drive for your computer while they’re still available. There’s still a reasonable choice of external drives. You could then rip Blu-rays to digital files and store them on, for example, a NAS. That way, your films remain accessible for streaming and playback. But with a large collection, this will undoubtedly be a major task and require a great deal of storage space.
It’s a pity to see that Blu-ray never really caught on with the general public. But it is what it is: everyone streams. The real risk, however, is that more unusual and/or older films will eventually disappear from streaming services altogether.

Yeah… true. Hopefully not. I always buy the ‘disc’-version, because of the fact that stuff can just disappear from services. Discs don’t just disappear. :-).
