PlayStation Store Removes Hundreds of Purchased Movies

Sony is removing hundreds of movies from the PlayStation Store—including titles that customers have already paid for. Refunds will not be offered.

Yet another stark reminder that content purchased through digital platforms is not always yours forever. Take the new case of Sony’s PlayStation Store. Hundreds of films are set to disappear from it, including a number of well-known and popular titles. According to Sony, the removals are once again the result of licensing agreements and distribution rights.

What makes the PlayStation Store situation particularly frustrating is that even movies customers have purchased can no longer be downloaded. Years ago, buyers were able to download purchased content, but today purchases are effectively limited to streaming access only.

Licensing issues are, of course, nothing new in the streaming world. Popular franchises such as the Harry Potter films regularly move from one streaming platform to another as rights agreements change.

However, Sony’s decision has a greater impact than the temporary disappearance of films from a subscription streaming service. In this case, customers did not simply pay for access to a streaming catalogue—they purchased individual movies with the expectation of adding them to their personal collection.

Unfortunately, those collections existed only within the PlayStation Store ecosystem. With the titles now being removed, they are effectively gone for good.

The situation once again highlights why physical media continues to hold considerable value for serious collectors.
