TRPTK announces Block4 Recorder Quartet’s new album Beneath a Pale Moon, officially launched today.
‘The Block4 Recorder Quartet is a multiple award-winning and internationally acclaimed ensemble. It combines a dynamic approach to contemporary music with fascinating interpretations of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music. The ensemble was founded in 2012 in the United Kingdom,’ record label TRPTK announced.
Block4’s debut album contains a mix of “old and new stories.” It interweaves older music by Palestrina, Praetorius, Guerrero and Merula with contemporary compositions by Matthew Olyver, Andrew Crossley, Wojtek Blecharz and Michiel Mensingh. Furthermore, the album contains the innovative idea of pairing the music with a story. In this case written especially for the album by Essa Flet, and inspired by British folk tales.
“Our goal as an ensemble is to showcase the diversity and possibilities of our relatively unknown instrument. We wanted to use inspiration from all aspects of the recorder’s history to show its versatility. For this recording, we wanted to showcase some of our most beloved repertoire from our work as an ensemble, especially our own arrangements and works composed for us as an ensemble.”
