Keith Jarrett – The Köln Concert, 50 Years Later

In 1975, Keith Jarrett played one of the most remarkable performances of his career — the now-legendary The Köln Concert. This milestone is being celebrated with a special double LP release.

The Köln Concert has long achieved near-mythical status, and for good reason: it remains a true masterpiece and arguably the highlight of the now 80-year-old pianist’s career. The album was recorded live at the Cologne Opera House, where — despite a series of behind-the-scenes mishaps — all the stars somehow aligned to create a timeless work of art. You can see the full story unfold in this year’s feature film Köln 75.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the recording, a limited-edition double LP has been released under the fitting title The Köln Concert: 50th Anniversary Edition. The set includes an eight-page booklet with both original and newly published photographs — including one featuring a printed signature by the maestro himself. It’s available via the Deutsche Grammophon webshop for €75, or through ECM Records for $64.98 (as shown in the screenshot above).

Sadly, Jarrett’s health has deteriorated in recent years. Following two strokes, he has lost the use of one hand, and walking remains difficult even after extensive rehabilitation. A poignant reminder of how unpredictable life can be.
