Burson has released the Soloist 3X headphone and preamplifier, now the fourth generation of this device.
High-end headphones have been doing well for quite some time now. And that of course includes a good source, such as this Burson Soloist 3X.
Ten years ago the first model of this series was released, now we have reached the fourth generation. Internally, it is already ‘high current’ (the Dutch translation is not so good) Class A what is going on. The whole is discretely built, including Burson’s own Max Current-feed. Three levels of feedback-based amplification can be set, matching headphones with a sensitivity ranging from 60 dB to 108 dB.
Mode with or without volume control
Furthermore, the Burson Soloist 3X has a ‘headphone power amp mode’; as soon as you switch it on, the volume control is removed from the signal path. The volume control used in the 3X is the same MUSE72320 based technology that is used in many ultra-high-end preamplifiers. The inputs are 1 x XLR, 1 x RCA and 1 x Mic Bypass; the outputs are 1 x XLR preamplifier/DAC, 1 x XLR headphone jack and 1 x SE headphone jack. The frequency range of the Soloist X3 runs from 0 to 48 kHz. The price of this Burston is $1144 American dollar.
