With the new FiiO DM15 R2R, you’re not just getting a portable CD player — you’re also adding a USB DAC to your setup, all built around R2R conversion.
FiiO has announced its next-generation portable CD player: the DM15 R2R. According to the company, this device redefines what a portable CD player can be, combining CD playback, high-fidelity R2R digital-to-analog conversion, hi-res Bluetooth, and the ability to act as a DAC and headphone amplifier for your phone or laptop.
Overview
The DM15 R2R incorporates five core components: CD servo, USB DAC, R2R module, Bluetooth module, and a dedicated MCU (microcontroller unit). Key points — in FiiO’s own words:
- Enhanced amplification: Compared to its predecessor (the DM13), the DM15 R2R delivers a significant boost in output power. The single-ended outputs now deliver 310 mW + 310 mW, while the balanced outputs rise to 1150 mW + 1150 mW — more than enough for demanding headphones.
- Premium build: The unit is housed in a refined, lightweight enclosure with a tempered-glass lid that displays your CD artwork. The DM15 R2R remains fully portable while offering a distinctly premium tactile feel.
Fully differential 24-bit R2R DAC
At the heart of the DM15 R2R is FiiO’s in-house R2R DAC — a fully differential, four-channel, 24-bit resistor array made up of 192 precision thin-film resistors (48 per channel), each selected for 0.1% tolerance and ultra-low temperature drift.
According to FiiO, “this careful engineering aims to recapture the warm, nuanced character of classic CD playback, combined with the precision and clarity expected from modern hi-fi systems.”
Highlights
A quick overview of the key features:
- Hi-Res USB DAC: Supports PCM up to 384 kHz / 32-bit and native DSD256.
- Bluetooth transmitter: Uses the Qualcomm QCC3095 chip; supports aptX, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD and SBC, and can transmit audio via Bluetooth from both CD and USB sources.
- Sound tuning: Offers three BASS modes and eight built-in EQ presets — a total of 24 dynamic sound profiles, including a specially tuned RETRO preset for a rich, classic analogue flavour.
- CD ripping: While playing a disc, users can rip tracks in WAV format to a PC or Mac.
- User-friendly operation: A clear display, mechanical buttons, a traditional volume wheel and even a remote control make operation simple — whether at home or on the go.
Fully portable
The DM15 R2R features a 4700 mAh high-voltage lithium battery, offering around 7 hours of continuous playback (assuming a fully charged battery). ESP technology ensures shock-resistant playback, while Desktop Mode allows the device to run from external power instead of the internal battery.
Colour options & availability
The DM15 R2R will be available in four finishes: silver, red, black and white. At launch, only silver and red are shipping; black and white will follow in late December.
It is available worldwide immediately, priced at £249.99 / $249 / €269.
