Portable DACs are more popular than ever, and the new Astell & Kern HC5 gives you yet another option in this category!
It’s no surprise that portable DACs continue to rise in popularity. Most smartphones no longer include a physical headphone jack — and if they do (or if you’re using an older model), the audio quality is often far from ideal. With an external portable DAC connected via USB-C, you instantly gain access to significantly better sound quality and more flexibility. The new Astell & Kern HC5 has plenty to offer in that regard.
Inside, you’ll find the AK4499EX DAC chip paired with its dedicated AK4191EQ DSP. The maximum supported audio quality reaches 32-bit / 384 kHz PCM and DSD up to DSD512. Digital Audio Remaster functionality is included to upsample lower-quality files and streams for improved listening results. On the output side, you can choose between balanced and unbalanced headphone connections.
A double-shielded, noise-resistant cable is included, and the 1.62-inch OLED display shows playback information as well as system details. Operation is handled via a rotary control wheel. The Astell & Kern HC5 is priced at €499.
