New Pro-Ject headphone amplifiers

Pro-Ject has launched two new headphone amplifiers: the Head Box DS3 B and the Head Box S3 B, each with its own distinctive characteristics.

Both the Pro-Ject Head Box DS3 B and the Head Box S3 B feature balanced connections and are fully balanced internally as well. This design is intended to reduce noise and optimize channel separation. The main differences between the two models lie in their internal design and the maximum output power they can deliver.

The Head Box S3 B uses integrated amplifier chips in the form of two TI TPDA6120A2 ICs. Its maximum output power is rated at 820 mW into 30 ohms. The Head Box DS3 B, on the other hand, is built with a fully discrete design and is capable of delivering up to 1.5 watts into 30 ohms, making it particularly suitable for headphones that are more difficult to drive.

In terms of inputs, both units are equipped with RCA and XLR connections. On the output side, users can choose from a 4.4 mm Pentaconn connector, a 4-pin balanced XLR output, as well as standard 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm headphone jacks.

Pricing for the two models is as follows, with a choice of silver or black finishes:

  • Head Box DS3 B: £629 (shown at the top in the screenshot)
  • Head Box S3 B: £329
