For enthusiasts of electrostatic headphones, there is something new to consider: the STAX SR-009D.
Electrostatic headphones are a niche category in their own right, as they operate on fundamentally different principles than conventional dynamic headphones with voice coils. This also means that a dedicated electrostatic headphone amplifier is required. In the case of the new STAX SR-009D, such an amplifier is not included as standard. Moreover, STAX headphones use a bias voltage of 580 volts, which may differ from what an existing electrostatic headphone amplifier can supply.
Back to the headphones themselves. The SR-009D is an open-back design, featuring a generously sized diaphragm. The well-known Multi Layer Electrode (MLR) technology has been retained in this latest version. This technology originally debuted with the first SR-009 back in 2011.
The STAX SR-009D offers an extremely wide frequency response, ranging from 5 Hz to 42 kHz, with a sensitivity of 101 dB. Compared to the original model, several improvements have been implemented. The colour scheme has been updated, and the cable connection has been revised. Notably, the cable itself is now detachable. It is a six-core oxygen-free copper (OFC) cable. The ear pads are made from genuine sheepskin leather and, combined with a weight of 452 grams, should ensure a high level of long-term wearing comfort.
The Japan-made STAX SR-009D is available immediately, with a price tag of €3,700.
