The brand-new iFi iDSD GR 2 is a portable DAC and headphone amplifier in one, and the successor to the xDSD Gryphon.
From a distance, the freshly launched iFi iDSD GR 2 bears a slight resemblance to the hip-dac in terms of design. However, this model features a display as well as distinctive ridges in its enclosure. More importantly, it is an entirely different device positioned in a higher class.
At its heart is a PCM1795 DAC chip, which according to the manufacturer should provide warm, analogue-sounding audio reproduction. In addition, the GR 2 features JVCKENWOOD’s K2HD technology, designed to restore harmonic details that have been lost from digital recordings.
Wired or Wireless
The maximum output power of this portable DAC is 1.513 watts RMS into 32 ohms. In wired mode, meanwhile, it supports PCM at resolutions of up to 768 kHz / 32 bit, while DSD playback is possible up to DSD512.
Alternatively, you can connect the GR 2 wirelessly via Bluetooth to your smartphone, for example. That means one less cable to worry about while you’re on the move. Of course, you won’t achieve the same hi-res quality offered by a wired connection. However, the Bluetooth 5.4 connection is certainly no disaster either, thanks to support for codecs including aptX Lossless and LDAC—provided, of course, that your phone or other source device supports them as well.
Desktop Mode or Battery Power
The iFi iDSD GR 2 offers two power modes. First of all, there is a built-in rechargeable battery, which provides around 7 hours of playback on a full charge. Alternatively, you can use the device in desktop mode with an external power adapter.
The latter consumes more power and will therefore—at least, we assume—also allow the GR 2 to continuously deliver its promised maximum RMS output power. In battery mode, on the other hand, power management is used to maximise playback time from a single charge.
Finally, you can control the device via the iFi Nexis app if desired. Alternatively, simply use the built-in OLED touchscreen and rotary control.
