JBL BassPro Go2

The new JBL BassPro Go2 is an unusual and multifunctional device. On the one hand it is a subwoofer, while on the other it is a full-range portable speaker.

With the BassPro Go2, JBL is bringing a rather unusual device to market. When the speaker is connected to its docking plate, it functions as a subwoofer. Disconnect it once it is fully charged, however, and it suddenly transforms into a full-range portable speaker. Add to that the fact that the BassPro Go2 was developed for marine and outdoor applications, and it becomes clear that this is a speaker designed for a wide variety of uses.

At the heart of the device is a 140mm bass driver, assisted by passive radiators. In addition, two 40mm full-range drivers are on standby for use when the Go2 is operating independently as a fully fledged portable speaker. JBL’s Smart Loudspeaker Control continuously optimises the sound while maximising low-frequency output. Everything is driven by Class D amplification, delivering a total maximum output of 100 watts, or 200 watts peak, in subwoofer mode.

(Salt)water- and UV-resistant

The JBL BassPro Go2 carries an IPX4 rating and is protected against UV exposure and saltwater spray. When used as a portable speaker, its built-in battery provides up to eight hours of playback on a full charge.

Another useful feature is the USB-C connection. Plug in a USB-C flash drive packed with MP3 or WAV files and the speaker can play them autonomously. The same connection can also be used to update the firmware and even charge a smartphone while you are on the move. Meanwhile, Bluetooth 5.4 with Auracast makes it easy to link the BassPro Go2 with other compatible speakers.

Pricing and availability have not yet been announced at the time of writing, so keep an eye on the manufacturer’s website over the coming period.
