The Pro Sound

A few words come to mind when we think about the way these particular speakers reproduce. Direct, effortless, grand, complete and dynamic. This speaker eats even the most complex types of music raw.

Now we don’t mean by this that this speaker can’t do sophisticated work. Or that we should compare it to a carpenter who uses a sledgehammer for everything. Because you shouldn’t see it that way. It’s just that this speaker plays so incredibly effortlessly and can do so with such dynamism and conviction that it all seems very simple.

It is also true that in a relatively compact room everything just feels very intense. And that’s because of its roots: PA. In fact, the system is designed to fill large spaces. Concert halls. With a lot of people. So a lot of energy is needed. And so that’s what these speakers give.

If we then ask to play very small, we can, but we hear that the speaker does prefer to give a little bit more. It’s like putting a pro cyclist on a granny bike and asking him to take a nice relaxing ride along the river…. it can be done… You get our metaphor?

Complete

It should be obvious by now what this speaker has to offer. Still, we would like to address the fact that this Hyperion plays full range. And does so with full conviction. 20 Hz is 20 Hz -3dB, we estimate; we cannot measure that in our room. Now we have experienced that with additional subwoofers or, for example, with Ascendo’s installation. But to hear that from one floorstander is quite extraordinary. Yes: these Hyperions by Joep are big, but they don’t look gigantic. And certainly not bulky, which is often the case with full-range models.

The result of this deep, powerful bass, is that music gets an enormous amount of breathing room. And that the scale also grows immediately. Live sounds really live and big too…. Unfortunately, we haven’t had time to watch movies, but that must be a seriously impressive experience as well.

Phase

So a unique feature about this active loudspeaker, is its extremely correct timing behavior; the phase is straight. Later in the measurements, you will see that this claim is true. What this does is that the stereo image is very calm and stable. And that a complex piece of music is therefore also very “right” and various layers hook together nicely. And that in turn results in a lot of calmness, because the brain doesn’t have to work as hard to make sense of things. It just makes sense.

We really noticed that during the listening sessions. You sit down and you think; yes … this is correct. How hard can it be to reproduce this? And then you hear it on another system and it turns out that it’s really not that simple. Think of a big piece of orchestral work. Or a piece by James Blake.

This is really the power of a system that keeps a grip and has a lot of “overhead”. But also a system that has been thought about and not skimped on solid electronics.
