We are present at Poulissen in Roermond to listen to three systems. We’ve already put the first two online. Now time for the third. A serious high-end system consisting of the top-of-the-range Accuphase range combined with the Bowers & Wilkins 800D3… their flagship. Top of the bill. But how does it sound? Is it worth – roughly – 100,000 euros if we include everything?
Some people just look for the very best and are willing to invest heavily for it. For this target group we sat down on the couch in the Diamond Room near Poulissen in Roermond. There’s a set of Bowers & Wilkins 800D3 and Accuphase. The top series, that is. Together with filtering (Audioquest Niagara 7000) and cables (Audioquest) that still comes at a rough 100,000 euros. Rightly a system for the happy few.
But what does such a system sound like? Very simple: complete, dynamic, stress-free. It sounds very self-evident. Like nothing’s gonna bother you… As if that’s the way it’s supposed to be. And of course, that’s how it should be with a top system. A high-end audio also drives effortlessly. Isn’t that right?
Could it really be better?
We’re not going to talk about taste now. That varies from person to person. Whether you like Accuphase or Bowers & Wilkins isn’t important now. The question is: can it really be better than this? Well… that’s very tricky. Because yes, there are more expensive and perhaps slightly better systems for sale. But you’re really heading towards systems worth half a million euros or more. Think of the NAIM Statement of Wilson Audio Alexandria and WAMM category. Yeah. Better… but in fact just… unfeasible. But anyway, there are customers for that, too.
