The Premium Sound
Contents
“What a nice little speaker!”, we hear ourselves say as we listen to Gazpachio. The live album, Night of the Demon, really sounds solid! Open, airy, smooth…. We are completely immersed in the live concert. When we close our eyes, Jan Henrik Ohme is standing in front of us expressing his pained soul in deep, worrying lyrics. Jon-Arne Vilbo’s guitar rips through the woofers and Lars Erik Asp beats pumping rhythms. Yes: this just rocks. Without getting restless or intrusive. Very nice.
And we say it again: two-way rocks…. Flow, calmness, space… These are typical characteristics that make us prefer to put down a two-way speaker rather than more complex three- or four-way models. Complexity in a loudspeaker rarely works in favor of playback quality. Especially rhythmically. And in terms of focus and air… It can be done, but it is (in our opinion) often unnecessarily complex and therefore unnecessarily expensive.
Supreme or Premium…?
We do not mean to say that the Premium outperforms the Supreme in every way. The Supreme can go deeper, louder and delivers more detail due to the stunning midrange and tweeter. However, this Premium does show that this is not absolutely necessary to get totally into the music. In fact: if we are really honest, we get into the music faster than with the Supreme… This may be because the resolution of the Supreme is higher and therefore it is more critical for matching than the Premium. But now we are getting sidetracked. In any case, it is interesting.
Back to the Premium…
We put on some other fun stuff. Think Massive Attack, some Radio Paradise, The Boxer Rebellion, Ghost Alive (recommended!), Steven Wilson / Porcupine Tree…. The Premium, along with the wonderful Hypex Nilai monos and Eversolo A6 Master Edition know how to make great music out of it. No nonsense, very affordable and just really good. This plays music. And that with a total price of less than 9000 Euro. And yes: that is still serious money. But this level for this money… that we do not see very often!

Heavilly inspired by the Audio & Techniek L50 speaker from the 80’s, see P24 here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rqclL1cNNQTSWYKpsA4HwgoP_2l9kyLY/view
Destijds eerst in het wit, toen in t zwart en daarna verkocht in t antraciet. Kan me nog herinneren dat t filter in de voet zat . Aangedreven door Akai of JVC ….ach ja 🙂
