For whom

This dac is for someone who thinks sound is the most important factor. Someone who can live with only three inputs and with the peculiarities of this device. Someone perhaps who has limited space and wants to put it on a desk. Then the interaction with the switches becomes a lot more interesting.
Superfluous
And although standalone dacs, without a streamer or volume control, are starting to become a niche product, we think there are still plenty of reasons to buy one. Especially if you want to listen to music digitally at a high level.
First, there is the freedom of choice. You have complete control over the number of inputs, the type of inputs, the type of dac and the manufacturer. Want a 1-bit dac with BNC connection and a big screen? No problem. Or would you rather have a Nos dac with I2S connection and no screen? The world is your oyster. With a built-in dac you are limited.
The main reason however, at least according to this author, is a kind of connection you get with the sound. A kind of familiarity that you also get from good element of a record player. After a while you know what you can expect from your dac and that gives you peace of mind. Not only in the playback but also for the listener himself.
This may sound strange but it really isn’t. Colleague Yung has had his Weiss DAC2 for years now, Jaap can not live without his Sonnet Pasithea and this author has his Sonnet Morpheus for four years now. The dac has become an indispensable part of our systems. A dac with class does most things right and very little wrong. And the Weiss DAC204 belongs in that short list. It gets under your skin and provides an incredibly fine listening experience. Again and again.
