Synology Announces Powerhouse: DS1821+

Synology today presented its latest 8-slot NAS: the DS1821+, designed for high-capacity, high-performance data management and storage. The new Synology DS1821+ is ideal for anyone looking for a high-speed NAS with lots of (potential) storage space. Thanks to its applications, versatile performance capabilities, and the ability to expand that storage space, content creators and businesses can easily store and secure their files, according to the press release that the manufacturer sent out into the world.

For demanding users

“Data is increasingly in demand and logically, our customers expect solutions that can meet these ever-increasing performance and capacity requirements,” said Julien Chen, Product Manager at Synology. “The DS1821+ has been specifically designed for customers looking for a versatile storage solution, even when used in a demanding multi-user environment

Outstanding Performance

The DS1821+ is, after the DS1621+, the second device in Synology’s Plus series that features the powerful quad-core ADM RyzenTM processor. This new processor delivers more than twice the computing power of its predecessor*, delivering significantly faster performance and shorter response time in Synology Drive, Moments and more.

SSD Cache

Built-in support for two Synology SNV3400 NVMe SSD cache drives can increase throughput performance for random operations by a factor of 20 or more for frequently accessed data. For enhanced network performance, optional PCIe 10GbE NICs** can be installed to achieve more than 2312.97 MB/s for sequential read operations and 1149.89 MB/s for sequential write operations***.

Flexible storage options

The DS1821+ features 8 slots and offers the ability to expand up to 18 using two DX517 expansion units^. Supported by Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) and complemented by JBOD/RAID0/1/5/6/10, Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR) allows users to create arrays with disks of unusual size while maximizing the storage potential of the array. In this way, older disks can also be used, and it is not necessary to install only disks with the same capacity.

SHR

DSM also provides an easy way to upgrade the storage capacity after the device is installed. Add a new drive and easily expand the array without disrupting services or time-consuming manual processes^*. Similarly, RAID options can be upgraded from a lower to a higher level of protection, e.g. from SHR-1 (redundancy for one drive) to SHR-2 (redundancy for two drives)^**.

Enterprise data protection

Synology’s recovery and backup solutions provide protection options for both data on external devices and data stored on the DS1821+. These solutions are available free of charge through the Package Center. To protect the IT infrastructure, the Active Backup Suite enables efficient and centralized backup from Windows and Linux PCs and servers, virtual machines on VMware and Hyper-V hypervisors, and Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 SaaS platforms.

Snapshots

Snapshot Replication creates schedulable point-in-time restore points, allowing unintended file operations and even encryption by ransomware to be reversed quickly and easily for both shared folders and iSCSI LUNs. Synology Hyper Backup enables schedulable ‘install and forget’ protection to store backups of your data on another Synology NAS, a USB drive, Synology C2 cloud storage, and other public cloud providers.

Availability

As of today, the DS1821+ is available worldwide from Synology’s vendors and partners. The recommended retail price is €860 (excluding VAT). * Improved processor performance compared to Intel Atom® processor C3538. ** Compatible NICs include the E10G17-F2, E10G18-T2 and E10G18-T1. Refer to the compatibility list for the latest compatible devices. *** Performance is achieved in the Synology lab with optimized configuration and network settings. Actual performance may vary depending on environment. Comparison made with the DS1819+ with 8 slots of the previous generation. Please refer to Synology’s performance page for more information on test settings. Supports either LFF (3.5″) or SFF (2.5″) SATA drives. See Synology’s compatibility list for drive compatibility. The capacity of the DS1821+ can be increased with two Synology DX517 expansion units sold separately. Certain restrictions apply when adding disks to existing storage pools. Please refer to this article for more information. ^** There are certain restrictions on RAID type changes. Please refer to this article for more information.
