The Matrix Audio MS-1c closely resembles the MS-1 Streamer DAC. Unlike the flagship model, however, it is also available in black and comes with a significantly lower price tag.
Dutch importer Reference Sounds announces that the brand-new Matrix Audio MS-1c Streaming DAC is now available. As mentioned, the MS-1c looks very similar to the MS-1, but the “c” variant—standing for “classic”—differs in both finish and pricing. According to the importer, the MS-1c also has a distinct sonic character: “With its special (selectable) output configuration, the MS-1c breaks away from the trend where DACs increasingly focus on extreme detail. Rich and smooth while retaining resolution—that’s the magic of the MS-1c.”
The MS-1c is a music streamer with an integrated DAC, based on Matrix Audio’s proprietary operating system. Reference Sounds explains: “This forms the soul of every Matrix Audio component, where digital data and interface come together as one coherent whole, developed around the user. Ease of use and seamless interaction are high priorities for Matrix Audio. The MS-1c reflects this with a beautiful touchscreen and the excellent MA Remote app, allowing you to enjoy music in no time, without hassle.”
Versatile
In addition to network streaming from Qobuz and Tidal via Matrix Audio’s own MA Remote app or Roon, the MS-1c also offers the option to play music from an internal SSD. This storage can easily be added by installing an optional SSD in the NVMe slot located on the underside of the unit, allowing you to conveniently store and play your digital music library.
The MS-1c provides digital output via AES/EBU, SPDIF RCA, Toslink, IIS-LVDS and USB Audio. Alongside its optimized digital outputs, it also features a newly developed DAC board built around one of the best chipsets available: the AK4191 and AK4499.
A unique feature is the user-selectable analog output stage. You can choose between a conventional direct-coupled output or a transformer-coupled output. At the press of a button, the MS-1c switches from an op-amp-based output to dedicated Lundahl output transformers, delivering—according to the manufacturer—an even more intimate and warmer sound signature.
“This once again shows how Matrix Audio approaches the world, putting the listener at the center. From your seat, the MS-1c lets you choose between pure and precise or warm and rounded. It allows you to tailor the sound to your preferences or to best suit the music you’re listening to. Because sometimes, you don’t want to choose between the blue or the red pill. Amazing!”, concludes Reference Sounds.
The MS-1c is available now in silver and black, with a suggested retail price of €5,799.
