Not all internet radio stations stream compressed audio, and Audiophile.fm offers a convenient way to listen to those broadcasting in high resolution!
Many popular radio stations simply use compressed streams for their online broadcasts. Depending on the compression method and bitrate used, the resulting loss in sound quality can be more noticeable (sometimes very much so) or considerably less so. However, a more select group of internet radio stations broadcasts in lossless CD quality or even higher. You can, of course, go looking for these stations yourself. Alternatively, you can use the brand-new Audiophile.fm app, available for iOS and Android.
The app is completely free, and, as is generally the case with internet radio, listening to the stations themselves won’t cost you anything either. All the stations available through the app stream in FLAC, at a minimum of CD quality. Moreover, they cover a wide range of musical genres, including jazz, classical, rock, electronic and plenty more.
Take a musical cruise
Because this is radio, you can discover all kinds of new music without algorithms getting involved. And that is immediately one of the biggest advantages of an app like this. Simply choose a station playing music that suits your tastes (or perhaps something completely different) and let yourself be taken on a voyage of discovery. You might even call it a musical cruise. The person at the helm decides what you hear, rather than an AI algorithm that keeps steering you towards more of the same.
As mentioned, the app is free. In return, however, usage data and similar information are collected. You can disable this data collection in the app’s settings using a switch that is enabled by default. And if you don’t have a smartphone or tablet, there’s no need to worry. You can also visit the website behind the app (although, strictly speaking, it’s the other way around…) and listen directly through your browser.
