Sonos has announced a major update to its app and says it is now genuinely committed to listening to user feedback.
It is encouraging to hear Sonos promise a more user-focused approach to app development going forward. Many users will remember the disastrous app update of 2024, which frustrated a large portion of the Sonos community. Following a series of attempted fixes, partial rollbacks and what many considered only a temporary solution, the words “Sonos” and “app update” appearing in the same sentence are still enough to make some users nervous.
However, according to a post on Reddit, Sonos CEO Tom Conrad is determined to change that perception. Since the difficult events of 2024, the company has been working to restore the app’s full functionality while bringing it more closely in line with customer expectations. In that respect, Sonos appears to have learned a valuable lesson.
The new version of the app will initially be released as a beta, allowing users to provide feedback on features and suggest improvements. Participants will also be able to report bugs and other issues directly.
According to the company, hundreds of hours have been spent observing how customers actually use the app in everyday situations. The first beta version is expected to arrive very soon—or may already have been released by the time you read this.
Those interested in joining the beta programme can register through Sonos. As always, it is worth remembering that beta software is likely to contain bugs, glitches and unfinished features, making a spare device the safest place to install it.
At this stage, Sonos has not yet announced when the final version of the redesigned app will become available.
