The rollout of the new Sonos app has finally begun. The manufacturer will be hoping that customers can now put the troubles of 2024 behind them.
We recently reported on the upcoming Sonos app improvements for both iOS and Android. The rollout has now started. Among the changes are a new optional tab-based navigation system, the ability to sort speakers and rooms, and a redesigned volume interface.
One of the most sorely missed features is also making a return: tabs at the bottom of the screen now allow users to switch quickly between Home, System and Search. For the time being, however, this feature remains optional and must be enabled manually via Settings and Enable Improved Navigation.
A wide range of other shortcomings have also been addressed, with numerous improvements introduced throughout the app. Sonos will be hoping that this helps users forget the debacle of 2024.
During that disastrous year for the company, Sonos released such a poorly functioning app that its entire ecosystem became almost unusable. The fallout was so severe that then-CEO Patrick Spence eventually stepped down in January 2025.
Whether the new direction will finally win users over remains to be seen. These are therefore yet another set of tense times for Sonos.
One curious detail: searching the Sonos website for the term “app” currently returns… nothing. At least, that was still the case at the time of writing.
